Wednesday, July 2 - Wednesday Breakfast Ride. Class C, 12 to 14mph pace, on hills 3 mph going up, to 29 mph going down. Get outside and enjoy Summer í97 with us. Hammer for 22 35 miles, depending on daylight. 6pm every Wednesday evening, at the Italian Fountain, behind the Art Museum. Inf.: Bruce Taubman, 735 7935. Thursday, July 3 After Work Ride, Art Museum to Conshohocken and Back. 30 miles. Class B, 15 17 mph. Weíll ride from the Art Museum out the Main Line, and take the bike path back to Philly. Do the hills early and the flat out speed at the end of the ride. Training style ride, with minimal stopping. We will stay together to insure that everyone finishes the ride without getting dropped. This is a new regular Sunday ride. We will do a different ride every week. I will be there most every Sunday. When I cannot, I will do my best to find a replacement leader. Meets every Sunday, 12 noon at #1 Boathouse Row, on Kelly Drive, East Fairmount Park. For the beginner who wishes to improve his/her cycling skills, for those new to Philadelphia who want to explore the little-known, out-of-the-way places in the city and near suburbs. There will be an easy 3 to 3 1/2 hour ride, maybe stopping for refreshments along the way. This weekís ride will be a shady Sunny ride along the beautiful Wissahicken to Valley Green. For those unable to make it to Quebec, enjoy this scenic ride to Lake Nockamixon. Terrain is mostly rolling with some hills. We will stop to buy snacks/lunch. Average speed 15 mph. Cue sheets will be provided. Meet in the parking lot across from the Youth Hostel at Evansburg State Park at 9:00. From Blue Route/Turnpike: From Plymouth Meeting take Germantown Pike west for approximately 9 miles, make a right on Skippack Creek Rd. and follow signs for the park. This ride comes with a few good hills, but we will wait for everyone. As Tim Carey has said, ìI never met a hill I couldnít walk upî. Cue sheets will be provided. Bring locks and money for lunch. Saturday, July 12 - Septa Ramble to Lansdale-Green Lane. Class B, 60 miles, scenic, rolling ride through upper Montgomery County. All riders depart on the R5 Doylestown train at 30th St. Station at 8:15am, be on the platform at 8am. Bike On Rail permits will not be needed during SEPTAís 6 month ìno permitî trial period. Bus departs at 6:00 am for Lake George to begin a 7 day Grand Tour of the Adirondacks, Lake Champlain, the Green Mountains of Vermont, LíEstrie of Quebec, the St. Lawrence River and Quebec City. Class B. 60 miles. Enjoy this ride into northern Montgomery County in search of Red Hill. We might not find it, but we are bound to find some other hills on this rolling to hilly ride. Leave at 9:00 from Fischerís Park on Bustard Rd, between Sumneytown Pike (Route 63) and Skippack Pike (Route 73), near Exit 31 (Lansdale) of NE Turnpike (left at exit, 1/4 mile to next light, right onto Bustard to 1.5 miles on right). SEPTA riders, take the R8 to Fox Chase. I will meet you at this station at 10:35 AM. Come and ride the trails along the scenic Pennypack Creek. The trails consists of fire roads and single track. Rest room stops included! C and D riders are invited! This is genuine MTBing in NE Philly. Will stop for a quick lunch of your choice: Slackís Hoagie, snack stand, or bring your own. All members welcome, no matter what class you ride. BCPís 1997 Annual Picnic has a new home. Ride on over to the Blue Bell Hill Park pavilion, just off Walnut Lane in Fairmount Park. Riders meet at the Italian Fountain 11am. The fun starts at noon and goes until 4pm. Weíll have volleyball, fun and food. As usual, donations of food and drink are encouraged. Sunday, July 27 - Boys of Summer BBQ Ride and Birthday Bash. Class C through A-, as follows: C, 40 miles(1 mile for each of my years), 10 12mph, Leader: Bob Paradise (yes, I will slow down); C+/B , 13 14mph, 50+ miles, leader: Glenn Schreiber; B/B+, 14 15mph, 55 60 miles, leader: Jeff Reardon; and Class A-, 17+mph, 70 miles, Jonathan Fox. Also, there are numerous trails for mountain biking if anyone would like to do that in lieu of the road ride. Join our celebration of my 40th birthday ride with a tour for all levels. Weíll meet at the Brandywine Creek State Park, on Route 92, just south of Rt. 202 in Wilmington, DE (upper parking lot to the right after entrance). From Center City, take 95 South, to 495 South, and immediately exit on Route 92, Namaans Road. Proceed south, than cross Rt. 202, to stay on Rt. 92. At the intersection with Rt. 100, turn left and turn left about 1/4 mile up into the state park. All rides leave at 9am. and include a lunch stop in route for everyone. Terrain is rolling and scenic, with creek beds and beautiful vistas. Afterwards, weíll BBQ and swim in the creek at the state park, so plan on bringing your bathing suit. Admission to the park is $5 for out of state cars, so please act environmentally and carpool it to the start! Or meet me at my house and ride to the start. Class B, approx. 85 miles, hilly in places. Start 8 AM from the Greenwood School, 1/4 mile south of Rt. 1 on Greenwood Rd, across from the Longwood Firehouse. We will do a short break at a store in the Landenberg/Kemblerville area and then on to the Susquehanna River at Port Deposit, MD. There is at least one indoor place to eat here or you can bring lunch along. Afterwards, a flat 4 5 miles up the Susquehanna flood plain almost to Conowingo Dam where the Octararo creek comes in, before we head back into southern Chester County with another break at either Oxford or West Grove. Class B 15 mph, & Class B+ 16-17 mph; 65 miles of rolling to moderately hilly terrain, or 72 miles, including a six mile loop with more challenging ascents and descents. Farmlands, foliage, fauna, and foraging on this fling through four counties. Lots of shaded sections for relief from the sun! This ride is a masterpiece and shouldnít be missed! Food stops and cue sheets. Leave at 8:30 AM from Fischerís Park on Bustard Rd, near Exit 31 (Lansdale) of NE Turnpike (left at exit, 1/4 mile to next light, right onto Bustard to 1.5 miles on right), between Sumneytown Pike (Route 63) and Skippack Pike (Route 73), Ride leaders: Tom Marra (610) 630-1601, tdmarra@aol.com; and Mark Spangler (610) 584-5993, mbsplace@aol.com. Sunday, August 10 Point Pleasant on the Delaware. Class B+, 16-17mph, 90 miles, rolling terrain. This replaces the regular Sunday Bulldog Ride. Meet at the Bulldog, be ready to leave at 8:00 sharp! Leader: Bruce Taubman, 735-7935. Sunday, August 24 - Scenic Schuylkill Century Volunteer Ride. 32/65/100 miles. 8 AM. Take your pick, this ride is for the hours of work all of the volunteers have put in for our new, soon to be famous Century ride. If youíre planning on volunteering or already have, please come out and join us. 32 mile ride is completely flat along the Schuylkill River. The metric and century are rolling terrain. This ride will probably be supported with someone following us in a car providing support, refreshments and food! Ride meets in the back of Memorial Hall in Fairmount Park, at 8am. I will need leaders for the 32 and 65 mile routes, and a person to do sag support, so please call me. Leader: Bob Paradise, 610 399 3307. Sunday, August 31 3rd Annual Big Apple Century. Class B and Class C. 62, 85 and 100 mile options. The only Century that takes you to the capital of the world. Fabulous farmscapes, the Watchung Mountains, the Great Swamp Wildlife Preserve, fancy suburbs, broad boulevards, the industrial wonder of Port Elizabeth, Newark Airport, Jersey City, Hoboken, home of baseball and Frank Sinatra, ferry to Manhattan, Statue of Liberty, Wall Street, and the Brooklyn Bridge.
