Sunday, August 1 - The Long (Poker) Ride. Class B+, 63 miles, 16-17 mph. Starts 8:00 from Wissahickon High School at Houston & Dager Rds in Ambler. Last year we rode the 53-mile version of the Poker Ride route, but this year well ride the decidedly hilly 63-mile route. If you like hills, this is the ride for you. Please note that we will stick to the advertised pace for this ride. There will be a short food stop. Rain cancels. Call after 7:00 the day of ride if conditions are questionable. Sunday, August 1 - Berks County Odyssey. Class C+, about 55 miles. Starts 9:00 from the King's IGA supermarket, at the intersection of Pa 73 & Friedensburg Rd in Oley, Pa For parking instructions, visit http://www.berksbicycle.com. A multi-club ride using a BCBC route through Berks County to Port Clinton where the Appalachian Trail crosses the Little Schuylkill River. Lunch stop in the quaint town of Hamburg. Pizza stop at the end of the ride. You must call one of the leaders if you are making the ride. Some car pooling to the start is available. This is not a ride for beginners. We stop to regroup as required, no one dropped, cue sheets provided. Bring snacks, liquids and money. Call if you want directions or are interested in car pooling. Sunday, August 1 - B Ramble to Lansdale. Class B, 14-15 mph. 40- mile version and also a 55+ mile version. Detailed instructions will be available for 40-mile return. Saturday, August 7 - Havre de Grace. Class B, approx. 70 miles, 14-15 mph avg, hilly but with scenic views of the Susquehanna River and Chesapeake Bay. Starts at the Food Lion on the southwest corner of Rts 40 & 272 in Northeast, Maryland, at 8:15. Bring money for an indoor lunch at Havre de Grace. Saturday, August 7 - Schwenksville. Class B-, 13-14 mph, about 50 miles. We enjoyed this one so much in June that I decided to do it again, but with a return through Evansburg Park and then the reverse of a part of the Schuylkill Century route, avoiding a return on the Bike Path. Rolling with some hills through eastern and central Montgomery County. Food stop in Schwenksville, sit-down lunch at one of two sandwich shops, unless the group is too large. Saturday, August 7 - Suburban Ride. Class C, 27 miles. Leaves Conwell- Egan High School parking lot, on Wistar Road, Fairless Hills PA at 9:30. Mostly flat with paved shoulders. Travel through 5 townships and 4 different towns. Suburban Levittown to historic Bristol with a stop at the summer home of the guy standing on top of City Hall, Billy Penn! Sunday, August 8 - Shawmont Avenue Bridge to BJ's. Class D, 20 miles, a few hills. We'll leave at 10:00 from just under the Shawmont Ave bridge (right near the entrance of the Schuylkill trail just past the section in Manayunk), ride to BJ's, then do a few more miles on the trail up to the Norristown train station. Sunday, August 8 - TOPS: Milford. Class C+/C, 12-14 mph, 45 miles. Tandems of Philadephia and Suburbs ride to Milford for a treat at "The Bakery". Stops in between, no one dropped, easy hills. All tandems, recumbents and single bikes welcome. Start 10:00 at Moravian Tile Works behind the Fonthill Mansion. Take Easton Rd (Rt 6ll) north to Doylestown to Court St. Turn right onto Court and continue to Swamp Rd. Turn left on Swamp and make immediate left into driveway to parking lot. Saturday, August 14 - Delaware and Raritan Canal. Class B, 15-16 mph, 60 miles. The ride travels through some of the most beautiful pristine roads of Mercer and Somerset counties in New Jersey. The terrain is mostly rolling, with two hills and one long gradual climb. We'll stop for lunch. Starts at 9:00 from the Washington Crossing State Park in New Jersey. I-95 to the first exit in NJ (Rt.29), then north on Rt 29 for about 1-1/2 miles to Rt 546. Left and right before the bridge to the parking lot. Sunday, August 15 - The Schuylkill Trail. Class C, 60 miles. Yes!!! The whole trail!! Starts at 9:00 from Lower Providence Park (www.montcopa.org/parks/lpvp.htm), Egypt Road & Rt 422, and travels down the trail to the Art Museum. The ride is relatively flat, but we will take to the roads through Manayunk, so there will be a few hills. This will be a long C ride, an opportunity to experience a B distance at a C pace. Wednesday, August 18 - Delaware and Raritan Canal. Class B, 15 mph, 40+ miles. This time we'll ride the Delaware and Raritan Canal bike path to Frenchtown. It is totally flat, but paved with loose gravel, so fat tires are needed. We'll stop for lunch in Frenchtown and return on the Pa. side. I promise a good workout and a sore body at the end of the ride. We will try to maintain a B pace, conditions permitting. Saturday, August 21 - Picnic. Class all, 30 miles. Meet 11:00 at the Spring Mill train station parking lot, not the train station. All bikes and classes are welcomed; the Schuylkill Trail, which is our route, is paved and autos are banned; we will keep this at a confortable pace for all, but if you must be the first one there, we'll catch up. Saturday, August 21 - Ride the Boards at the Shore! Class C/D, 12-13 mph on the road, 8-9 mph on the boardwalk, 30 miles. Ride the Atlantic City boardwalk and the island. The ride will start at the parking lot on the boardwalk, just south of the Hilton Hotel. We start promptly at 7:45 because the boardwalk closes to bikes at 10. Take the AC Expressway to Exit 2, the last exit before entering AC, or take the Black Horse Pike all the way into AC. You will cross over a bridge (Intracoastal Waterway) and see "The Monument". Continue about 1/3 around the monument and you are on Pacific Ave. (first street from beach). Take the first parking lot (large) on your right. Parking is $7 or $10 for 12 hours. We will ride to the north end of the Boards, then backtrack to the southern end in Ventnor, then south onto Atlantic Ave. to see Lucy the Elephant in Margate, and on to the Longport inlet to enjoy the ocean view on the jetty. Then it's inland to Somers Point for breakfast at Smittie's. Total ride time 4 hours. There are public facilities on the Boards. If you need transportation, I can take 3 riders. Sunday, August 22 - Glenside-Paoli Express. Class B+, 55-60 miles, 16- 17 mph. Starts 8:00 from the Glenside Library at Keswick Ave & Waverly Rd in Glenside. We head west toward Paoli and Valley Forge Park. This is a hilly ride, with a featured climb up Diamond Rock Rd. Please note that we will stick to the advertised pace for this ride. Sunday, September 5 - Peter Odell Memorial 10th New Hope to New York City Ride. Classes A, B and C, with 125, 90, 70 and 50 mile options. The only century that takes you to the capital of the world. First 106 riders will be registered on a first-come basis, so get your registration and fees in early! Registration deadline: Tuesday August 26. Bulldog Ride. August 1, 15, 22 and 29. For strong B riders. 50-60 miles. One short rest stop at a Wawa type store. The main difference between this ride and the B ramble is that it is longer and the rest stop is shorter (it is not lunch!) We will go to Paoli or Doylestown as the group wishes. No cue sheet, so everyone sticks together and the leader can't be dropped. Meets at the Bulldog statue at 25th St & Pennsylvania Ave, we leave at noon sharp. Leader: Bruce Taubman, 215- 725-7935. Pennypack Park. Class C, 12-13 mph, 17 miles. Departure time is usually noon and the ride usually leaves from the city's far northeast section and heads downstream toward the Delaware River by way of Pennypack Park's paved road--but check with the leader for cancellations and variations in start time and location. Usual departure location: Pollock Elementary School on Welsh Road across from Tolbut St, lower parking lot. Sunny Sunday Afternoon Ride. Class D, usually 12-25 miles. Narberth ChainSmokers. Class B, 15-16 mph, 33-35 miles. Our 2004 training rides through the back roads of the Mainline go to Valley Forge before returning. Schuylkill Trail. Class C+, 25+ miles. Meet at the Spring Mill parking lot of the Schuylkill Trail at 6:30 PM. Riding towards Valley Forge and beyond, this will be a chance to keep the legs in shape and get in some after-work miles without having to dodge potholes and cars. As the season progresses, the pace will be adjusted as we get in better shape, but feel free to break away and stretch your legs at any time. Marlton. Class B, 15-17 mph, 20-25 miles. Come for a beautiful ride thru Marlton, Medford, & Shamong. We'll start in Marlton at the Kings Grant Development, progress thru Medford, and then into Shamong and back. If there's any interest, we can do one or two fast 3 mile loops around Kings Grant at the end of the ride. Meet at Kings Grant shopping center (2nd entrance), make right on Merchants Way. Glenside. Class B/B+, 16-17 mph, approximately 30 miles. Come explore the interesting and diverse roads of eastern Montgomery County! We'll ride until dark on routes that are moderately hilly and generally lightly traveled. Meet at Keswick Cycles on Easton Road just North of Keswick Ave in Glenside, for a prompt 6:30 PM departure. Mountain Bike Ride in Wissahickon Park. Class B or C, approx 6-12 miles. We meet at the parking lot just west of the Valley Green Inn at 5:45 and leave by 6 PM. We usually have 2 rides: intermediate and advanced. Note that we bike the trails, not Forbidden Drive. Helmets are mandatory. Rain cancels. You should get a Wissahickon Park permit - cost is as little as $10 (the fee is really an annual contribution to the Fairmount Park). NEW! Freaky Friday Ride. August 13, 20, and 27. Class B, 40 miles. Meet at 9:00 at Laurel Acres Park in Mt Laurel, N.J. Rt 38 to South Church St, south on S. Church St approximately two miles to park entrance on left. One food/rest room stop. Practice paceline riding on quiet, flat S. Jersey roads. BCP Softball. Every Friday in August; last game of the 2004 season is August 27. We will meet at 6 PM at Clifford Park, Walnut Lane & Wissahickon Avenue and play until dusk. Krank with Kolman. Class C, 30-40 miles, 12-14 mph. This is wonderful, open flat to slightly rolling farm land. Come on down and discover a new area to ride. MTB Belmont Plateau. Class C/D. We'll meet 10:00 at the Italian Fountain for a 3-hour ride. The trails are crushed rock, dirt and maybe a creek crossing, wide fire roads and twisty singletrack and a few climbs for spice! A MTB or cyclo-cross or hybrid bike will work; you should have a permit, see BCP website for link. Use bug repellent like OFF! or anything with DEET.
