BCP Ride List for February 2001
If you're not sure of how hard any ride is relative to your ability, please CONTACT the LEADER before the ride.

Sundays
Sunday Morning Breakfast Ride. Class C, up to 35 miles. Bring locks. Meet 8:45, 22nd & Spring Garden for a delightful ride to a delightful place to have a delightful breakfast. Winter rides may be canceled if snow or ice are on the street or if the temperature goes below 32. Bulldog Ride. Class A-/B+, 45-65 miles, average speed 16-18 mph depending on the terrain. Meets most Sundays at the Bulldog statue, in the triangular park at 25th St, Fairmount & Pennsylvania Aves. B Ramble. Class B, 14-15 mph, approx. 40 miles. Meet noon at the Italian Fountain (PLEASE NOTE RETURN TO NOON START). All February rides have a mystery destination. Sunny Sunday Afternoon Ride. Class D, usually 12- 22 miles. Meets every Sunday at noon in front of Lloyd Hall, #1 Boathouse Row, on Kelly Drive. For the beginner who wishes to improve her/his cycling skills, for those new to Philadelphia who want to explore the little-known, out-of-the-way places in the city and near suburbs. Show and Go.
Sunny Sunday Spin-Off Ride. Class C, usually 25-30 miles. A true C ride which cheerfully waits to regroup. All welcome. Meets 12:15 at the rock near the Italian Fountain, behind the Art Museum. Wallyball. February 9 and 23. Come to the Aquatic & Fitness Center at Riverside Racquet at 600 Righters Ferry Road in Bala Cynwyd at 7 pm for a fun and invigorating game of Wallyball. What is it? Volleyball in a racquetball court. We play until at least 9:00. Cost is $7.50 per person. Bring your own lock for a locker. Call the club at 610-664-6464 for directions. NEW POLICY!! Saturday, February 3 - My First Half-Century. Class B/B-, 14 mph, 50 miles, hilly. Join me to celebrate making it this far! A slight extension of my regular training route to include a nice lunch stop and to make the required mileage, one mile for every year. Leaves 10:00 from Brunos, Germantown and Northwestern Avenues in Chestnut Hill. Rain, snow, or high temperatures forecast below freezing cancels. Saturday, February 3 - Glenside Free Library. Class B, 13-15 mph, approximately 30 miles around eastern Montgomery County, exact route to be determined. Just a few small hills included to keep everyone honest. Leave 10:00 from the Glenside Free Library. Pace will be a leisurely one. If snow is on the roads or temperatures are below 30 degrees, this ride will revert to a mountain bike ride in Pennypack Park, leaving from Pine Road. Rain cancels everything. Sunday, February 4 - Its Wednesday on Sunday. Class B/B-, 12-15 mph, 33 miles, mostly rolling terrain with four hills. Are you missing those ever-popular Wednesday night rides from Bikeworks in Harleysville? Come with me as we retrace the extremely popular Wednesday night summer route. This is a great opportunity for some of the slower riders to experience the longer route. No rest stops or cue sheets will be provided. However, this will be a leisurely ride with the main focus on fitness and fun. We will regroup at the top of each hill and NO RIDERS WILL BE DROPPED. Rain, snow, or temperatures below 25 degrees at the start cancels. The ride leaves from Indian Valley Bikeworks, Maple Ave & Route 63 in Harleysville, Pa, at 9:00 sharp. Sunday, February 4 - Bike or Hike Ridley Creek State Park. Hike, Class 1 or 2, 6 miles, or Bike, Class C, approx. 12 mph, 20 miles. If you want to go, call or e-mail me during the week before and cast your vote to hike the trails in the state park or ride to Cheyney Univ (pregnant chads will not be counted). Call Friday or Saturday for the final decision. If we hike, wear boots and dress warm; bring water and snacks. Late lunch in Media afterward. Everyone invited to hike - bikers/non-bikers, tenderfoots, family/friends. You can even bring your dog (really)! Trail maps or ride sheets provided. Wednesday, February 7 - Make it a Night. Ice Skating at the Blue Cross River Rink. Start time is 6:30. Well skate for two hours and then head out to a local eatery for dinner. The rink has been moved north of the Ben Franklin Bridge at the corner of Spring Garden & Columbus Blvd. Bring your own skates, or rent them at the rink. Costs are $6 for entry and $3 for rentals. Saturday, February 10 - Lunch in Avondale. Class B, 48 miles. We leave 8:30 from Chadds Ford Elementary School, on Rt 1, 4/10 of a mile west of Rt 100 in Chadds Ford, Pa. We will ride up the Brandywine River valley to Springdell for a brief stop at 20 miles out and then 10 miles more to Avondale, & lunch at a Mexican restaurant. Saturday, February 10 - Bike or Ski. Class C ride or Novice XC- Skiing. Meet 10:00 in the main parking lot near the bird watching deck at Fort Washington State Park. Its on Route 73, 2 mile after Rt 73 crosses Rt. 309. Heading west, after you cross Bethlehem Pike, the entrance is 1 mile on the left. From Stenton Ave, turn right onto Joshua Road, park is on the right. SEPTA R5-Doylestown stops at Fort Washington, less than a mile north of the park. Buckman Ski shops and REI rent cross country skis. If there is no snow, we will road bike to Montgomeryville and ride another section BicyclePA S Route to Doylestown or Washington Crossing. Sunday, February 11 - Wissahickon with the Fun Wheelers. Class C-/D, 20 miles. Ride up Forbidden Drive along the scenic Wissahickon Creek. View the famous statue of native American Teddiuscong, who was a guide for William Penn. Continue through Barren Hill and Spring Mill, returning on the tow path. Some of this ride is on hard packed gravel. Road bikes can be used, but mountain or hybrid is a better choice. Short stops at Valley Green and in Manayunk. ONLY ONE CLIMB! Meet 9:30 in the shopping center off Main St just west of the Main St and Ridge Ave split. Bear left onto Main St, look for street parking across from shopping center. Sunday, February 11 - Fixed-Gear. Class B, 30 miles, 14-15 mph average. Departs 10:00 from Betzwood Bridge, lower parking lot. We dont need no stinkin derailleurs. We will do the same route as in December. First a loop, then if the weather is good and the path is clear, maybe well do some additional miles on the VF bike path. Saturday, February 17 - Central Bucks County. Class B+, 38 miles, 16 mph. This is a moderately hilly winter ride that is short, but it will give you a nice workoutyou can be sure of it. Well start 9:30 from the Bowmans Hill Wildflower Preserve on River Rd (Rt 32) and travel north through many pristine roads where beauty can still be appreciated even in the dead of winter. We will stop for snacks and fluids at mile 11, since there will not be a lunch stop. Well go slower than the B+ pace if the group wants to. The Preserve is 2 miles south of New Hope on Rt 32. From Center City, take I-95 to exit 31 (New Hope), left at the exit for about 4-5 miles, then right on Rt 32 for another 2 miles. Leader: Luis Figueroa, 215-673-1170, Luisbikefiggs@aol.com.
Saturday, February 17 - Northwest Quest. Class C, 30 miles. Meet at Brunos at 10:00 for a ride to places northwest of the city. Sunday, February 18 - February Thaw or Frozen Popsicle. Class B, C+ welcome, 40-50 miles, 14-15 mph rolling average. Depending on the weather, well be one of the above. Regardless, come out and get your miles in. Ride starts 10:00 from the Chadds Ford Wawa. There will be a cue sheet, but we may vary from it based on the groups desire. No ride if its rainy or if the roads are hazardous. Take I-95 south to Rt 322 West, to Rt 1 South, cross Rt 202 and the Wawa is at the next light (2.5 miles) at the junction of Rt 1 and 100 in Chadds Ford. Park behind the Wawa. Lunch stop; no cue sheets. Meet at the Burger King, north of Oxford Circle on Castor Ave. Leaves 9:30 sharp. Call if the temperature feels less than 32 degrees at ride start time. Saturday, February 24 - Poker Ride. Class B, 13-15 mph. Meet 10:00 at Wissahickon High School, Dager & Houston Roads, Lower Gwynedd Township, for a reprise of PBCs 32-mile Poker Ride route. Its fairly hilly, but the pace will be leisurely. If snow is on the roads or temperatures are below 30 degrees, this ride will revert to a mountain bike ride in Pennypack Park leaving from Pine Road. Sunday, February 25 - 2nd Annual BCP Goes to the Big Apple. All Classes. Too cold to ride? Need to drop your bike off for a tune-up? The itinerary will include a quick stop at the bagel shop at Penn Station, a several-hour visit to the Metropolitan Museum of Art, a stop at the Manhattan Bike Shop, and dinner at a moderately-priced restaurant. We will travel via SEPTA and NJ Transit, and navigate NYC by subway and bus. SEPTAs R7 Regional Line to Trenton departs Market East Station 7:07 (Ill be getting on at Holmesburg Junction), and we will take the 8:15 NJ Transit train out of Trenton to NYC. We should be back in Philadelphia by 9 pm. Costs for the trip are approx. $30 for train transportation, $10 for subway and bus tokens, $20 for dinner. This will be a long day with lots of walking, not suitable for young children. Important! Please call or e-mail if you plan on coming or have questions. You will be responsible for obtaining your own Regional Rail/NJ Transit tickets (NJ Transit tickets can be purchased the day of the trip at Trenton) and we will purchase tokens at Penn Station. Ride to Betzwood, with option to cross the river and tour Valley Forge Park before returning on the bike path. All ride together, with stops to regroup as necessary.
