Sunday, February 9 - Brandywine Winterland. Class B, 14 mph, 53 miles, rolling with very few hills. This is a shorter version of Doug Kennedy's ride to Parkesburg in Chester County and also includes a late breakfast stop at the Little Chef. Hopefully, Doug won't have a cold this time and will be able to join us. Very nice loop through the farms of the Brandywine Valley. For the sake of Doug' health, any chance of snow or rain cancels the ride. Starts 10:00 from the Pocopson elementary school lower parking lot near Chadds Ford. From US 1, take Route 100 north for about 3 miles and continue straight onto Route 926 west over the bridge and RR tracks. At the first light (Pocopson Rd), turn right and then left onto the school's driveway to the first small parking lot, way before the top of the hill. Call if weather is questionable. If you are a weather wimp, this is an ideal winter ride for you. It will be led by wimps especially for wimps. Designed so that there are just enough moderate climbs to warm us. AS AN ADDED INCENTIVE: if the temp. is 32 F or below at the start of the ride, SteveT will treat all of the weather wimps who do the ride to hot cocoa at the Kimberton Whole Foods Cafe'. Expect nice winter scenery along the way, including a pretty stretch along Pickering creek and a covered bridge crossing of French creek. No one dropped. A joint ride with BBC. Saturday, February 15 - Take to the Woods! Class C, 7-10 mph, 9 or 18 miles. Starts 9:00 on the north side (Philly) of Route 420 in Prospect Park, Pa, at the John Heinz Wildlife Reserve side lot. From there we'll ride the Reserve's pathways observing winter nature (we may stop to look) on a low-impact mountain bike ride. The Reserve is noted for birds, deer, foxes, rabbits, and a whole lot more. located at the edge of Philadelphia. If the Reserve's nature center is open, we'll stop inside for a look at the displays (bring a lock). Afterwards we'll head back to Route 420 following a different path. If you want, we can do a second 9-mile loop. Please note that the trail is very tame. This makes the hybrid bike an excellent alternative if you don't own a mountain bike. Mountain bike rides like this one can be enjoyable alternatives to the road even if the temperatures are low. So don't let the cold deter you. Wet weather or recent heavy rains will cancel as navigating the trail will not be practical. Light or old snow may still allow the ride to occur. Call ahead. Leader: Frank Jackson, 610-534-3978 (eve), 215-537-4299 (day), fjackson@rohmhaas.com.

Saturday, February 22 - Forbidden Drive. Class C, 12-13 mph, 20 miles. Meets at 10:00 across from the Spring Mill train station, North Lane & Hector in Conshohocken, at the bike path. This is the same ride that Pat Rock listed last month, but the only one who showed was Hizhonor, the Prez. Bring your mountain bike or hybrid for this one. We'll take the bike path and towpath in to Manayunk, then climb up another path across the stream from Lincoln Drive to Forbidden Drive, and head up to Bruno's for a milkshake or perhaps hot cocoa. We'll then go up Andorra and down Barren Hill back to the train station. Knobby tires will probably be needed, since Forbidden Drive and the towpath both can be muddy.
