BCP Ride List for January 2004

Thursday, January 1 2004. Start Your New Year Off Right! Join the women from Sturdy Girl Cycling. We'll meet behind the Art Museum at 11 and ride the temperature. So if it's 30 degrees we'll do 30 miles; 18 degrees...well, you get it. The group will stay together and keep a constant tempo to stay warm; there will not be a formal rest stop, so bring snacks and water. Rain, snow, ice, or wet roads will cancel this ride. Saturday January 3 - Mexican Lunch in Cochranville. Class B, approx 55 miles, 14 mph. Leaving from behind the Wawa in Chadd's Ford at Rt 100 at 8:45. Leaders: Doug Kennedy, 610-543-4664, dougkennedy7@yahoo.ca, and Debbie Wilson, 302-798-1243, djwbike@aol.com.

Sunday, January 4 - Giro Invernale I. Class B, 15 mph avg, 45-60 miles depending on the weather. Road conditions and air temperature will determine our destination. We'll have a choice of routes in Chester, Montgomery, or Bucks County. All options will include a stop for hot coffee or even a full breakfast (for food and warmth) if the group gets really hungry. Temps below 0 degree (F), snow accumulation over 1 foot, or ice skating rink- like road conditions will cancel. Starts at 9 from Bruno's. Email to confirm and find out where we are going. Sunday, January 4 - MTB on the Pennypack Trails. Class B+/C. Starts from the Pine Road entrance to Pennypack Park at 9. A longer and more challenging version of the ride that we do on Tuesday evenings. We ride for approximately 2 hours. Sunday, January 4 - B Ramble. Class B, 14 -15 mph, 40-45 miles. Meet at the Italian Fountain behind the Art Museum at noon. Show and Go.

Thursday, January 8 - Hooky Ride. Class B-, 42-50 miles. Play hooky from work to tour Amish country. Ride leaves at 9 from Bob LaDrew's house near Coatesville. Bagels & juice before ride. Call or email for reservation & directions. Leader: Bob LaDrew, 610- 383-9327, 2ladrews@netreach.net.

Saturday, January 10 - Turkey Trots. Class B, 14-15 mph, 41 miles. This is a moderate-paced, not-too-hilly ride through some of our northern suburbs. Suitable for fixed gear, but no restrictions. Meet at Bruno's at 10. Only a convenience store stop planned. We will go unless forecast highs are below 25 Fahrenheit or if there is ice on the roads or rain or snow in the offing. Leader: David L. Sunday, January 11 - Ride with Steve and Arnie. Class C, about 30-40 miles. Meet 9:30 at Manhattan Bagel Shop in the Chesterbrook Shopping Center on Chesterbrook Blvd. Who are Steve & Arnie? What's the destination? Come and find out. Expect nice scenery and some hills. No one dropped, stops to regroup as needed, cue sheets will be provided. Bring snacks, beverage and money. A joint ride with BBC and DVBC. Call for directions or weather concerns. Sunday, January 11 - Lambertville to Stockton Hike. 8 miles, Level 1 (flat, soft ground). Hike at 10:00 from Lambertville in New Jersey to Stockton. Meet behind the Lambertville Station Restaurant & Inn unpaved parking lot. We will walk on the Pa and NJ sides of the Delaware River. Bring enough water and snacks. Monday, January 12 - BCP Monthly Meeting. 6:30 PM, Szechuan Garden Inn, 47 W. Lancaster Avenue in Ardmore. It's near Ardmore Avenue, next to the Ardmore West shopping center (entrance is from parking lot facing the railroad tracks), just a short walk from the R5 Ardmore station. 610-649-7668 for directions. So we're going to try something different - a new site has been selected for the January meeting. If this is popular, and more people attend, meeting places in other parts of the metro area will be be chosen, in the coming months.

Sunday, January 18, - Chesterbrook to Mont Clare (aka Schuylkill Canal Days, selected as our best ride of the season). Class C, about 45 miles, 11 mph average. Starts at 9 from Manhattan Bagel in the Chesterbrook Shopping Center on Chesterbrook Blvd. This ride will take us along some well-traveled biking roads in western Montgomery County to the Oaks Reach of the historic Schuylkill Canal. We will lunch at the Fitzwater Station Inn, on the banks of the canal in Port Providence. Expect some hills at a moderate C pace. Cue sheets provided. No one left behind. Sunday, January 18 - MTB on the Wissahickon Trails. Class B+. Starts from Bruno's at 9. We ride for approximately 2 hours. We'll change it up a little and ride on the decidedly more technical terrain of the Wissahickon Valley. Please note: a trail permit is required! Sunday, January 25 - Ride with the Recumbents. Class B-/C+, 35 miles. Leave 9:00 from the old IGA shopping center just north of Lambertville, NJ on Rt 29. Easy ride up to Frenchtown and back. No one will get lost or dropped. Of course all bikes welcome to join us. If you ask nice we might let you try a bent or two. I will ride in any temperature, but rain or snow will cancel. Sunday Morning Breakfast Ride. Class C, up to 30 miles. Meet 8:45 at the SE corner of 22nd & Spring Garden for a delightful ride to a delightful place to have a delightful breakfast. Bring locks and money for brunch in the middle of the ride. We always need volunteers to lead us to delightful eating spots and pretty biking areas. Rides might be canceled at temps below 32 degrees or when there is ice or snow on the road. Sunny Sunday Afternoon Ride from Lloyd Hall will resume in April when daylight savings time returns. Have a good winter and we'll see you in spring !!

Sunny Sunday Spin-Off Ride. Class C, usually 25-30 miles. A true C ride which cheerfully waits to regroup. All welcome. Meets 12:15 at the rock near the Italian Fountain, behind the Art Museum. Tuesdays

NightRiders. Class C. 10-20 miles. We spin around Southern DelCo in the dark. Bike lights front and rear are a must. You must call or e-mail the leader to confirm the start time and location. Very cold or wet weather will cancel ride. Most rides start at 6 PM. Leader: Dave Trout, 610-368-0760, dmtrout@usa.net.

MTB on the Pennypack Trails. Class B+/C. Starts from the Pine Road entrance to Pennypack Park at 6:30 PM. Lights are required. We ride for approximately 1-1/2 hours. Come enjoy the great outdoors after dark! Depending on weather and/or trail conditions, the day may change. Call or e-mail to confirm that the ride is on. Fridays

Wallyball. January 9 and 23. Come to the Aquatic & Fitness Center at Riverside Racquet at 600 Righters Ferry Road in Bala Cynwyd at 7 PM for a fun and invigorating game of Wallyball. What is that, you ask? Good question - it's volleyball in a racquetball court. We play until at least 9:00. Cost is $7.50 per person. Bring your own lock for a locker. Saturdays

MTB Belmont Plateau. January 10 and 24. Class C/D. Meet at the Italian Fountain at 11 for a 3-hour tour. The area consists of packed dirt, loose and crushed rock, twisty single track, steep climbs. Perfect riding! No ride if weather's poor or below 40 temps. Leader: Paul Winkfield, 215-329-983, paladin007@comcast.net.

Northeast Ramble. Every Saturday in January. Class C-, 25 miles. Usually leave at 9:30 promptly with a brunch stop. Must call Thursday or Friday Eve. to check on point of departure, destination. Depends on weather & temp. Leaders: Dick & Madge Trickey, 215-288-6907.
