Saturday, June 1 - It's Miller Time. Class A/B, 16 mph and B -13-14 mph, 57 to 62 miles. It's time to introduce your granny to Mr. Miller out there in the hinterlands of Marlborough Township. So bring her along for an early summer jaunt over the back roads of Northwestern Montgomery County. We'll cover mostly rolling terrain,with an optional ascent of Miller Road in the Delmont Scout Camp. Riders wishing to do so can stop for food at mile 28 in Green Lane. George, Glenn, and Sally know the route, but there will also be a cue sheet for the hares and the turtles. Meet at Evansburg State Park, across from the youth hostel - at the BCP century stop, for a prompt 9:30 departure. From the city, take Rt 73 West. Left at Evansburg Road. Left at Kratz. Ride the race course 8 days prior to this year's USPRO Cycling Championship & Liberty Classic races. We'll first head down the Ben Franklin Parkway around Logan Circle and back to the start area and then out along Kelly Drive to Manayunk, up the Manayunk Wall (Ride up Class B/Walk up Class C) and back down to Kelly Drive through Strawberry Meadows and Lemon Hill, then return to the start area. Saturday, June 1 - Perkiomen Trail Grand Opening. All Classes, 15 or 35 miles. Starts 8:30 from Valley Forge Park Visitors Center, lower parking area. Fat tires recommended as some of the trail is crushed stone. Cross the river to Betzwood for the 9:00 Grand Opening of the first 5 miles of the new Schuylkill River Trail Extension. Then ride to Lower Perkiomen Park in Oaks on the new trail. Morning refreshments will be served compliments of Montgomery County. Afterward ride the trail to Collegeville. Sunday, June 2 - Fiddler's Elbow. Approx. 75 miles at around 15 mph avg. Hilly. So, you think that New Jersey is flat? Come to see the hidden "Jersey Alps" along this very scenic route. Riding in New Jersey will never feel the same! This is the final test for those going on the Mt. Greylock tour; believe me, the climbs in Massachusetts will feel like molehills. But don't feel intimidated, nobody will be dropped (may be I will?). The ride is mostly in Warren county, NJ and upper Bucks county, PA. Beautiful roads. Meets 6 PM at Trophy Bikes, 311 Market St. See great baseball in a stadium the Phillies can only dream about, with Flying Fish on tap and real food, not that Vet plastic stuff. Ride over Ben Franklin Bridge walkways for a 6:35 game. Afterward, we'll slip back to the Ben Franklin (open till 10 pm) while everyone else is stuck in the parking lot and enjoy the after-game fireworks from the Ben walkway (optional ferry ride back, about $5). Saturday, June 8 - Mount Gretna: This Time, the Easy Way. Class B-, 73 miles at around 14 mph avg. Rolling/moderately hilly. We start from Blue Ball with typical farmland scenery in Lancaster County. Then climb over the Furnace Hills to explore the Great Valley of the Appalachians. Waiting for us, out of Hansel and Gretel's book, is the lovely town of Mt. Gretna. We'll tour the town and have lunch there. Then we'll climb over the county line again to return to the more familiar Lancaster County landscape. A truly scenic route. Bring plenty of water and snacks, since we'll probably make only one food stop. Starts at 8:30 from Shady Maple Market on Rt 23 in Blue Ball (PA TPK to exit 22, Rt 10 south towards Morgantown for about 1 mile, then right onto Rt 23 west for about 8 miles to intersection with Rt 897; market is on left). Approx 80 miles, maybe less, at around 15 mph avg, hilly. We'll start close to the Delaware River so we don't have to do much climbing on the way back. The ride is mostly in New Jersey (the hilly part) and loops between the nice towns of Frenchtown and Califon. Beautiful shady roads along rushing streams. Starts at 8:30 from Cold Spring Elementary School near Doylestown. Take route 611 North, after Doylestown bypass (expressway) ends, take first right (Silo Hill Rd) and then go left at the "T" onto Point Pleasant Pk. Go for 1.5 miles and turn right onto Durham Rd (Route 413). Go for about 0.5 mile and turn right into the school (the parking lot, not the building!). Call if weather is questionable. Class C+, 12-13 mph, 50 miles. Starts 9:00 from Delancey St. Bagels in the Wynnewood Shopping Center, on Wynnewood Road just off Lancaster Ave. Get there early and join us for breakfast. Ride the rolling hills of the Upper Main Line in Delaware and Chester counties to a nice lunch at the Pepper Mill on Paoli Pike. The beautiful scenery makes this hilly ride worth the effort. Freedom Valley Ride Saturday, June 22 - Beyond Evansburg, 75+ miles, class B, 15 mph average, and B-, maybe somewhat shorter, 13-14 mph. Hilly. We will be weaving in and out of the BCP century route, starting from Bruno's and going through quiet, scenic roads (once past the Plymouth/Whitemarsh traffic), past Evansburg Park and up into Chester County. On the way back we loop around Valley Forge to climb both Clothier Springs and N. Valley Road, then ride along the top of the ridge and some exhilarating downhill stretches, finishing by climbing up Barren Hill. Two food stops will be planned, but they will be of the WaWa variety. About 50 miles. Starts 9:00 from Bruno's, Northwestern & Germantown Aves in Chestnut Hill. A rolling to moderately hilly ride with a couple of steep climbs in the middle and a long flat section. We head northwest toward Blue Bell, then travel the CyclePA S route east and eventually west to Audubon, for a lunch stop at the 30-mile point. After that, the ride continues on the S route west to Route 23 and Valley Forge Park. Returning from there on the bike path followed by a climb back to Bruno's. Sunday, June 23 - Delaware and Raritan Canal Canoe Trip. 6+ miles. You have visited and enjoyed the Raritan Canal from the road, now enjoy the canal and its beautiful scenery from the water itself. The canal is 36 miles long and you will observe the historical towns of Griggstown and Blackwells Mill as well as glide under turn-of-the century bridges. The trip starts at 9:00 from Rt 533 (Milestone Rd) and Blackwells Mill Rd in New Jersey. From the south, take I-95 to Rt 206 North, to Rt 533 to Blackwells Mills Rd to the parking lot, which is about 100 feet down from the canal. If you don't have a canoe, you may rent one in Griggstown. Bring the necessary water and food for at least a half-day stay. You may stay longer and visit the Mules Tender's Barracks Canal Museum and the bridge-tender's house and station. Meet at Bruno's (Northwestern & Germantown Aves in Chestnut Hill/Lafayette Hill) for the 8:00 start. We will head out through the Main Line, dive down towards Valley Forge but then turn up towards Paoli where we will head over to Glen Mills covering some lovely roads along the way. Terrain is rolling with a few longer climbs. As always, the goal will be to stay together on the flats, wait at the top of the climbs for those traveling at their own pace. Saturday, June 29 - Staying in the Shade along the Brandywine. Class B, approx 60 miles at around 14-15 mph avg, rolling. We'll try to stay cool by looking for as many shady roads as we can find (bring plenty of water in case we don't find them) and trying to avoid major hills. No need to describe the Brandywine valley, you know it's beautiful. Starts at 8:30 from Chadds Ford Elementary School, just south of the intersection of routes 1 and 100. Starts 9:00 in East Cheltenham at Tookany Park. Parking is on the west side of Tookany Parkway north of Central Ave. The ride starts in the Tookany watershed, follows the Pennypack to the Pennypack watershed of Bryn Athyn and finishes near the Neshaminy watershed of Tyler State Park. Near the start, we pass the current end of SEPTA's Fox Chase commuter line at Ryan and Jeanes Streets in Fox Chase. The unused rail line that is to become a multi-use trail is crossed three times en route to Newtown. We will ride sections of completed trails along the way. A 25 mile bicycle tour of Philadelphia, through cobblestone alleys of Old City, the bustle of the Italian Market, City Hall, the Gate of Chinatown, the Furness Library in University City, and many more historic and notable points of interest. Sunday, June 30 - Delaware Water Gap. 72 miles with a few hills at around 14 mph avg. I am planning on doing this ride on my tandem, so expect slow climbs (fortunately not many). However, anybody is welcome to take off and follow the cue sheet. The ride starts heading west along the south side of the Blue Mountain ridge. We'll find the most difficult climb of the ride when we cross the ridge at Little Gap (Blue Mountain ski resort). After a fast long descent we continue east, parallel to the north side of the ridge until we reach the Delaware Gap. No climb here, the Delaware took care of carving our passage back to the south side of the ridge a long time ago! This very scenic area makes the trip to the start worth it (a little bit over an hour from Plymouth Meeting). Bring snacks and water since we may not find any open store along the first 45 miles. Route 476 North to Allentown exit; route 22 East towards Bethlehem for 17miles; route 33 North for about 7 miles to Belfast exit. Go right at the end of the ramp, then first left (Belfast Rd) to Jacosburg Environmental Center parking lot on the left side of the road. Ride starts at 8:30. Call if weather is questionable. We explore some of the back country roads leading to the Butter Valley Golf Course. You won't want to miss this extremely scenic route with a combination golf course/airport as the rest stop. Watch golf balls take off down the first fairway while they parallel a Piper. Just remember to look both ways and up when entering the driveway! No cue sheets, wet roads or rain at the start cancels.
