Sunny Sunday Afternoon D Ride. 12:00 PM. For the beginner who wishes to learn and improve biking skills. Usually 12-20 miles. Wednesdays
October Wednesday Morning Ride. 10:00. Class C+, 12-14 mph, up to 45 miles. Start at the Spring Mill station on the Valley Forge Trail. Call for parking info. We will take a different direction each week. Some destinations are: the Art Museum with lunch at Le Bus on the way back, Collegeville with lunch on the way back, Bruno's ride & lunch. Northeast Training Ride. 5:30 PM. Class B-/C+, about 20 miles. A ride into Bucks County and back. Call or email to make sure ride is going; no call (or email), no ride. Front and rear lights required. Ride will return around 7:00 PM. Meet in the Lincoln High School pool parking lot, on Rowland Ave, just north of Ryan Ave. Note: Weds October 1 ride will take place on Tues September 30. Conshohocken Night Lights Ride. 6:00 PM. Class B, 15-16 mph, 27 miles. The "Night Lights" meets every Wednesday in October and November in the SEPTA parking lot beneath the Conshohocken bridge, Harry St and E. Elm St. Strong front and rear lights are required. We'll ride down to the Art Museum area and take a 5 minute break at Lloyd Hall. We'll then return to Conshohocken by 8:30. Rain, snow or starting temp below 45F cancels. MTB on the Pennypack Trails. 6:30 PM. Class B-/C+. Starts from the Pine Road entrance to Pennypack Park. Lights and a trail permit are required: http://www.fairmountpark.org/pdf/Trail_User%20Permit%20Application.pdf . Come enjoy the great outdoors (without cars) after dark! Saturday Northwest Philly Rides. C to B- paces. Ft. Washington State Park Flourtown Picnic Area on W. Mill Rd, between Stenton Ave and Bethlehem Pike (from the Chestnut Hill direction: 1st right on Stenton after Northwestern Ave. or left just after Acme on Bethlehem Pike). We offer a variety of scenic rides into surrounding counties, often with a sit down food stop. Saturday C+ Training Ride. 10:00. Class C+, 13-14 mph, 30-40 miles. Ambler and Plymouth Meeting are among the common destinations, and we do our best to ride as a cohesive group. Routes are as flat as possible. We'll try to keep a steady pace and effort: rolling speed on flat terrain ~15 mph. Meet at the Italian Fountain behind the Art Museum at 10:00. Saturday, October 4 - Whitehorse/Sugartown Breakfast Ride. 8:00. Class C+/C, 30 miles. Starts from the Church of the Saviour (COS) on North Wayne Ave in Wayne. Meet in the parking lot in front of the gym. We ride 20/25 miles in Radnor hunt country, followed by a community buffet breakfast hosted by the Paoli-Malvern-Berwyn Rotary Club. A 5/10 mile return ride to COS after breakfast. A multi-club ride. Bring $8 for the breakfast. RSVP to the leaders before Saturday if you will attend the breakfast. The chef needs a head count. Saturday, October 4 - The Dragon Boat Ride. 9:00. Class B-, 13-15 mph, 35 miles. Meet at Fort Washington State Park Flourtown Picnic Area (see Weekly Ride description for directions). This ride takes us through Chestnut Hill and West Mt. Airy to Kelly Drive, where we'll stop, get some food, and watch the Dragon Boat races on the Schuylkill River for about an hour. Sunday, October 5 - Do The Bristol Stomp! 8:00 & 9:00. Class B+/B/C/C-, 12-18 mph, 55 & 83 miles. This multi-location/multi-level ride has everything. City, suburban and country terrain. Small creeks, big ponds, wide rivers and good ice cream. The 83 mile route starts at 8:00 from the Flourtown Picnic Area (33 W Mill Rd in Flourtown) and will stop for lunch at mile 45. The 55 mile route starts at 9:00 from the Bryn Athyn College parking lot, Tomlinson and Buck Rds in Huntingdon Valley, and will stop for lunch at mile 33. Rain cancels. Saturday, October 11 - Carversville. 9:00. Classes B/B- (15 mph) and C+ (13- 14 mph), 53-65 miles. Meet at Fort Washington State Park Flourtown Picnic Area (See Weekly Ride description for directions) for a 65 mile ride, or at Upper Dublin High School (Loch Alsh and Fort Washington Aves in Fort Washington) for a 53 mile version starting at 9:30. A very scenic ride on some great Bucks County roads. Mostly rolling hills. We'll stop at the Carversville General Store (about 5 miles from Lahaska) for lunch, with a quick break on the way up and again on the return. Co-listed with SCU. Sunday, October 12 - Kutztown Creeky Hill Ride. 9:00. Class B, 15 mph, 46 miles. Features hills, creeks, hills, woods, hills and a lake. Seek the missing Windsor Castle. Look for the virgins of Virginville, hometown of Frog Holler's Darren Schlappich. Encounter some of the most beautiful and strangest creekside views you've ever seen. Admire the view of the Pinnacle. While there are no planned meal stops, there are convenience stores at miles 16 and 30 for water refills and snacks. Depart from Kutztown Elementary School, 40 Normal Ave, Kutztown, PA. Sunday, October 12 - Instructional Riding Class for New Riders. Class D, 8-10 mph, 10-12 miles. Meet at the formal entrance to the Azalea Garden, at the Italian Fountain circle behind the Art Museum (on Waterworks Drive past Lloyd Hall) at 12:00 PM. Class begins with a basic safety and bike check. Instruction on the fundamentals of group riding and gear shifting will be given along the route. We will ride on MLK Drive and in east Fairmount Park to practice our riding skills and gear shifting on a gentle hill. There is plenty of time for questions and answers and no one is left behind. Saturday, October 25 - Schwenksville. 9:00. Class B- (13-14 mph), 50+ miles. Meet at Fort Washington State Park Flourtown Picnic Area (see Weekly Ride description for directions). Reprise of one of my favorite rides, last done in early August, but with a new wrinkle. Rolling hills with a few short, steeper climbs. At least half of the ride is on bucolic, low-traffic roads. Saturday, October 25 - "Seeing the TRAFFIC World with Bonnie". 9:00. Class D+, 10-12 mph, 15-20 miles. Hold on to your socks! We are going to bike in Center City traffic in all different configurations of lanes, turns and intersections. No way to make this funny. E-mail us your favorite stops and we'll incorporate them. We will have handouts. We may resort to using a stick in the gravel. We will have personal anecdotes. We may have prizes. We may have a quiz. Smile. We will explore human and bicycle safety in traffic and we will become more comfortable. Leave at 9:00 from the entrance to the Azalea Garden behind the Art Museum. Saturday, October 25 - Hopewell Furnace Classic. 10:00. Class B, 13-15 mph, 62 miles. A revised version of this classic ride through the Oley Valley. Starting from French Creek State Park (the boat launch parking lot). This ride features two covered bridges, a rest break at a chocolatier, a sit down lunch stop in the town of Oley and much more. The terrain will be hilly for the first and last 15 miles. The middle 30 miles are flat to rolling. If our timing is right, we should be riding through the peak leaf changing weekend. Sunday, October 26 - Chesterbrook to Skippack. 9:00. Class C, 11 mph avg, about 40 miles. Meet at Manhattan Bagel in the Chesterbrook Shopping Center, easily accessible from US202 and PA252. We spin over to VFNHP to travel through parts of SE Montgomery County - W+E Norritons, Worcester, around Evansburg State Park to Skippack. After brunch our route traverses the new "Skippack Trail" to the Perkiomen Trail. We proceed to Lower Perk Park, connect to the SRT and finally back to our start. Expect some uphills as well as a few long downhills. There are about 6 miles of compacted gravel trail but this has not been a problem for my road bike. No one left behind as we stop to regroup. Cue sheets provided. A multi-club ride. Bring snacks, beverage, money and a lock.
