Want to help out? This
event runs on "people power" and it requires the effort of many folks
to make it a success. You can even
volunteer and get to ride. There are many tasks that occur prior to the day
of the ride (such as road markings and baking) and some early in the day of the
ride (registration and breakfast) that leave plenty of time to go on the ride.
With our change in routes last year (three circular routes, from rest stop to
rest stop) you can even do a shift at a rest stop and have time to cycle a
portion of the ride, complete with rest stops and SAG support.
As always, volunteers will receive this year's gifts, free entry to the SSC, an invitation to the volunteer party on Friday, Sept. 10 and a great deal of satisfaction.
We obviously have a fantastic
group of volunteers. A whopping 99% who took our post-ride survey
said they were EXTREMELY OR VERY SATISFIED with our volunteers. Some of our
favorite quotes include:
– I love them. It wouldn't work without them and I am always
more grateful than words can convey to their participation in these types of
events.
– Volunteers were awesome and very positive, which was needed
when the weather was making you question why you came out in the first place!
– A great group and with a wonderful outlook. Made you feel
very welcome.
– Food and friendly rest stop volunteers are always
outstanding. Great club.
– Very helpful and friendly. They did a great job (again).
Many thanks to all who put in the time and effort to make the day a success.
– Greatly appreciate people taking time out of their busy
schedules to make this ride happen.
– I am very grateful for all the volunteers who made these
rides fun - who gave up riding so that the rest of us could ride. Thank you
very much!
– Always nice to see the friendly, helpful BCP volunteers.
Makes the ride very much more pleasurable.
Please read the various
volunteer descriptions that follow, and then email the appropriate contact
person(s) for the opportunity you are interesting in.

century chairpersons
The Chairpersons oversee all aspects of the Century,
providing leadership, a helping hand whenever needed and answers to any
questions or concerns. The 2010 Chairs are Sergio Armani, Howard Hochheiser,
and Chuck Martin.
The Century Chairs can be reached at century@philllybikeclub.org.
Baking
Providing fresh, delicious,
homemade baked goods at our rest stops is one of our hallmarks. We ask each baker
to provide baked goods to feed 5 dozen riders or more.
Please contact Faith Goldstein at faithgoldstein@gmail.com.
Bike Shops
Supplying bike shops with our
event literature is a great way to get the word out. Perhaps you have a local
bike shop that you would like to help supply.
Please contact Chuck Martin at cgm455@aol.com.
Breakfast
Another one of our hallmarks is
breakfast prior to the ride – we help fuel riders by providing bagels, bananas,
Philly soft pretzels, yogurt, juice and coffee.
Please contact Howie "foodman"
Wiener at Howard.Wiener@usdoj.gov.
Database
Food Stops
We have three food stops:
Please contact either Barbara
Rosenberg at bikebarb@hotmail.com
or Howie "foodman" Wiener at Howard.Wiener@usdoj.gov.
Pizza Bash
Yet another hallmark of our ride. We traditionally
have a pizza party at the finish.
Please contact either Margaret Lenzi at bcpmarg@comcast.net or Carlos Martin
at
carlos123martin@hotmail.com
Publicity
Distributing our event
literature at other club’s events is a great way of getting the word out. If
you have an event that you are going to and have some time to hand out
literature, please let us know and we’ll see if we already have the event
covered.
If anyone has experience that would help us
publicize the event through print or other mass media, we can certainly use
your expertise.
Please contact Chuck Martin at cgm455@aol.com to help
at an event or Howard Hochheiser at howard@thebluestargroup.biz
to help with mass media.
Registration
Volunteers are needed to check-in pre-registered and non-pre-registered riders, and give out wrist bands and gifts. Registration opens at 6:45. A few people will be needed to help set up starting at 6:15 AM. Others might report closer 6:30. Anyone who wants to ride the SSC should be free to leave when things wrap up, which is usually around 8:30.
Please
contact Cathy Flynn at cflynn@thebluestargroup.biz
or
Pat Haggar at phaggar@comcast.net
Route Marking
We mark
the route within a few weeks of the event using spray paint and stencils. We
try to mark place markings before and after turns, and in areas where riders
may be uncertain where to go. This is usually done in teams of two who are
responsible for 5 mile segments.
Please
contact Dave Finger at davederailleur@hotmail.com
or Rich Wagner roadrich@hotmail.com
.
Sag
We
provide SAG support (support and gear) for riders who are either unable to
complete the event or are having mechanical problems. Mechanical expertise is
not required (but welcome) as we will bring people and their bikes to the
closest Rest Stop that will have mechanics. SAG drivers will receive a stipend
to help defray their gas costs.
Please
contact Joe Feeney at JFe7378071@aol.com or
Mike Seidman at orders@prnt4u.com .
Signs
Jeff
Kimmel is our premier sign maker. Jeff creates the signs used on the routes and
the stencils used for marking the routes. Further assistance is not currently
needed.
Transportation
Rich
Wagner is our transportation guy, driving a truck the night before the ride and
the day of the ride (picking up and delivering the supplies). Further
assistance is not currently needed.
Volunteer
Coordination
Chuck
Martin is helping coordinate this year’s volunteers by keeping lists, checking
them twice and forwarding names and leads to the various coordinators. Further
assistance is not currently needed.
Please contact Chuck Martin at cgm455@aol.com.
Volunteer Party
What’s
an event without a party? We traditionally have a party the night before the event,
and this year will be no different (Sept. 10). The party does double duty as an
opportunity to collect and/or distribute supplies.
Please
contact Jennifer Payton at paytonjl@hotmail.com.
Website
Sam
Wiley is the BCP webmaster and oversees the Century website pages, setting it
up and updating it as needed. Further assistance is not currently needed.
Please contact us at century@phillybikeclub.org
for additional information or questions.
