Come with the Bicycle Club of Philadelphia on this annual event, Sunday, Auguat 31, 2008. This is the only century that takes you to the capital of the world: New York City. Participants can choose from three different ride classes: A, B, and C, in addition to four distances: 125, 90, 70, and 50 miles. With this kind of variety, riders will have the opportunity to participate in a cycling adventure that best matches their cycling ability. Registration is limited, so get your registration form and fees in early! No registrations will be accepted after August 27th.
The route, developed by the late Peter Odell, will take you through the scenic countryside of central New Jersey over very gentle rolling terrain. After meandering along the South Branch of the Raritan River you will cross over the Watchung Mts and descend into Basking Ridge NJ. Here you will pass one of the oldest trees in America (over 633 years) before riding through the Great Swamp National Wildlife Refuge. Riders will take the ferry from Hoboken to Manhattan and then ride over the Brooklyn Bridge before reaching their final destination in Brooklyn Heights.
BCP has made arrangements for riders to use shower facilities in a health club upon their arrival in NYC. Nearby are many affordable fine dining establishments that Brooklyn Heights has built a reputation for. There are a myriad of cuisine choices, including Thai, Italian, Greek, Indian and Continental. Your return trip to New Hope and Philadelphia will be via motor coaches. The bicycles will be transported back by professional movers, and will be waiting upon your return.
Registration form and $65 ($75 for non-BCP-members) are due in by Wednesday, August 27th. Fee includes motor coach trip home and moving van for your bike, and showers. Dinner is your responsibility.
The 125-milers will leave the Art Museum (Eakins Oval) at 6 AM. Cyclists riding 90, 70, or 50 miles can board the bus at the Art Museum, or they can drive to New Hope (Staples Plaza, 1 mile north of Route 32 on Route 179) and park. The number who can take the bus from Philadelphia to New Hope is limited to 20. Therefore participants must confirm with Art Elwood that they will be taking the bus to New Hope. The buses will leave the Art Museum for New Hope at 6 A.M. The bus will leave New Hope at approximately 7:30 A.M. and drop off the 70 and 50-milers at their respective starts. At the end of the day, buses will depart Brooklyn at 9:00 pm sharp, stop in New Hope, and then go on to the Art Museum in Philadelphia.
Be sure that your bike is in good condition and that you come prepared with a pump, spare tubes, etc. Also, because of the high costs of the motor coaches, we reserve the right to cancel or limit the event if we do not have sufficient registration.
