Tips/Checklist for Ride Leaders

Things to Bring

BCP Sign up sheet w/pen (retain filled out copy for 1 year) 
BCP applications 
X copies of cue sheet 
County/area map 
Two spare tubes (one for you, one for another rider) 
Self-adhesive tire patches (Park makes them)

Outline for Pre-ride Introduction

Ask if everyone has signed the sign up sheet.  Then get it back.
Ask riders to give phone no. for emergency contact 
Introduce the ride(destination, duration, distance, special features, special hazards/problems, confusing turns, location/timing of food/lunch
stop(s), toilet stops) 
Traffic laws - the club policy, etc. 
The pace -Your policy re stragglers 
No drafting without (1)notice, and (2)permission 
Your policy re breakdowns (wait or keep going?) 
Helmets are required 
I lead from the front/rear  [Choose a sweep, preferably beforehand] 
Single file, unless . . . 
Ride to the right, not in the middle of the road - 
Remember the Golden Rule (how would you feel if you were a driver and saw what you (the bike rider) was doing?) - this promotes good relationships w/drivers. 
Ask riders to call out re cars, potholes, braking, etc. - use your voice and hand signals 
The three foot rule (if you have a problem, get 3' off the road) [Warnings re extreme: heat, cold]

Special tips for "D" Ride Leaders (Review the following w/riders)

1. How to adjust QR levers correctly
2. The correct tire pressure (eyeball riders' bikes, squeeze their tires)
3. Simple safety tip.

a. watch for parked car doors opening
b. watch for cars passing, then turning right
c. don't ride in a driver's blind spot
d. your other favorite tips

4. Adjustment of their helmets
5. Quickly check riders' brakes (are they adjusted?)
6. Whether they are properly dressed, given the conditions
7. Use of bright clothing and reflectorized materials
8. Gear shifting (how and when to do it)
