Sun January 21, 2018 - Hike the Wissahickon: Kilimanjaro Expedition

Hike Mountaineering, 2-3 mph, 6-8 miles. Wissahickon Braves Arrow Field, Henry Avenue and Walnut Lane, Philadelphia, PA (Parking lot across from the Walnut Lane Golf Club). The hike leaves at 9:30 am. In early 1970 Sir George Head led a daring expedition to the twin peaks of Mount Kilimanjaro. His goal was to rescue the previous year's expedition led by his brother who, along with his entire team, vanished while attempting to build a bridge between the peaks. Sadly, the expedition failed twice over, finding neither Sir Head's brother nor his identical twin. BBC has produced an excellent documentary on Sir Head and the expedition: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xbFl5cCNcB4. Come join us for this enjoyable 7-8 mile outing which will lead us through the delightful twin gorges of the Wissahickon, passing by both Lovers' Leaps and both Hermit's Caves before descending the 200 Steps to the two bike paths paralleling Lincoln Drive. Due to the confusing terrain in the area, we will be following a guide, Laura Palmer, to the Twin Peaks. Hope you can make it. The on-line route map is https://goo.gl/maps/ixDwW5PZ9Q82.
